Nick was taken too soon, but we can all have a private experience and share his emotions. Great song. Great pairing. This is what I think that something is; the journey is more important than the destination. Thus the irony of the inevitability of death, how their party looked crass and shallow. Thank you so much for posting this video! Absolutely one of the best American commercials, hands-down. Like others, it introduced me to Nick Drake and for that, I'll forever be grateful to VW. Just a brilliant spot that showcased the notion that quite often, the best things in life are the simplest. Kudos to VW and their ad agency and I truly hope that more commercials are made like this in the future!

I don't believe in this commercial. The original devotees of Nick Drake's music are angry. Such a beautiful song should not be advertising a stupid car. This did bring a new crowd to Nick Drake's music, but they found out about him the cheap, mainstream way. Thats no fun. Half the people will only listen to this song as well and never take the time to listen to the rest of his brilliant songs.

Yeah, the German cars (especially in Europe itself) are seriously sweet. I used to work in Germany, and I'm tellin' you, even the *cabbies* drive BMW's and Mercedes there. And the VW's are workhorses, they live up their cred-- they gotta cart things up and down the Alps, and those VW's refuse to break down. I had a great time working in Germany. German language isn't that hard, good currency, nice cities, plus hot cars and yeah, hot women too, I will definitely agree!

There's no way it was '97, i remember this commercial was out when i was in Elementary school. A friend of mine from that time was talking about this commercial after we were jammin' out in his basement to the newer song by Onyx "Slam" which was released in '93. Plus this body style Golf was released in '93, the '97 Golfs were slightly different...face lifted in '96 and that has the grill of the pre facelift. Steering wheel looks really early...non airbag early, my two '95s had airbags atleast.

Fantastic advert, Volkswagen-UK really have come out with some pretty good adverts in the last few years. Golf GT Sport is a cracking car too, anyone who says there not has never been in one. Its the little superficial things that make it a cut above the rest, the solid clunk when closing the boots or doors, the blue glow of the interior, the solid and supportive seats and top notch dash materials. Not fogetting the 2.0 TDI and 1.4 TSI engines by far the best in class.

I think German cars are poor, Ive owned 6 of them in total and everone of them has given alot of (expensive) grief. From Golfs constantly blowing main fuses for no reason to premature rust. VW`s are overrated. Not all things German is great. German engineering made a name for itself during WW2. That was a long time ago. I rate german cars on everything except reliability. They give u just a lot of trouble. Ditto most French cars. I don`t want a Golf not because of the gay thing, but because like you said there are better choices.
